NEMO/ MONOLYTH RECORDS SHOWCASE:
THE OUTLETS, THE AMAZING CROWNS, BIG BAD BOLLOCKS, THE PILLS, LITTLE RED ROCKET Bills Bar, 4/15/00

The end of the NEMO weekend came for me Saturday night at the newly swank Bills, with an impressive lineup of Monolyth acts. Hailing from "Boston South" (AKA Athens, GA), Monolyth's latest addition, Little Red Rocket, prove to be a crowd-pleasing opener. The Rockets, Orenda on vocals, guitar, and trumpet, Maria on vocals, guitar, and keyboards, Jackie on bass, and Scott on drums, are quite an innovative bunch. Their sound brings to mind a combination of Lennon/ McCartney, Elastica, and the early Breeders, with a few curveballs thrown into the mix. Maria switches between guitar and keys, while Orenda pulls out some trumpet lines and sings into her guitar pickups. Their harmonies are lush and sultry, although a bit low in the live mix. Those synchronized Pete Townsend arm waves are a bit cheesy, but the strength of the material and presentation more than compensate. An impressive debut; welcome aboard.
